Description

Mac users are—or should be—familiar with the Dock, a customizable strip of icons pinned to the edge of the desktop. Application, file, or folder aliases (“shortcuts” in Windows parlance, I believe) can be dropped onto the Dock for quick and easy access. Adding too many, though, can result in congestion and confusion.

I reached this point not long ago when Adobe, as they do every year, added new versions of their Creative Cloud applications. Since I maintain copies of InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Acrobat all the way back to CS5 (so I can work with old client files as needed), it’s easy to imagine the consequences of adding at least four new icons every year to an already crowded Dock.

Stacks are folders of aliases that can be added to the Dock, grouping multiple items and cutting down on the clutter. As long as I was “stacking” Creative Cloud applications, I decided, why not do the same for all the applications on my Dock? So I created a batch of high-resolution icons (1024 by 1024 pixels) and used the free version of Image2Icon to slap those icons onto the stack folders.

My Tools stack contains a grab-bag of applications I often use, generally in connection with my profession as a graphic designer and production artist. Use it on your own computer! If you want custom icons, let’s talk.
