Little green army-man syndromeAddendum: I recommend reading the comments, which represent a wide variety of viewpoints and interesting thoughts. I may not agree with all of them, but that doesn't mean they aren't worth airing or hearing.
To date I generally have refrained from commenting on pony episodes, but I'm making an exception for "Wonderbolts Academy". This isn't a review, exactly, nor is it an overview, exactly—but it does contain elements of both.
Along with a couple of local friends I was mildly disappointed by the story, for reasons summed up in this post's title. That phrase is my private nickname for the funhouse-mirror treatment of military organizations by civilian scriptwriters who have little or no knowledge or understanding of how and why they work. Instead those authors create caricatures that would not look out of place on a playground littered with small plastic molded toy soldiers. It is so pervasive in the entertainment industry as to be endlessly grating, especially to one whose fathe

Chapter 1 'Unexpected Encounter"

"Well, it's nice to be back in Canterlot; so much has changed!" Twilight said as she continued walking, excitement in her voice. Sure, she'd been here a few times since she'd moved to Ponyville, but this was really the first time she'd been there just to relax and reconnect with her roots, as opposed to a party or being called to save the world from an ancient evil that escaped its prison. She remembered Rarity's friendship report after Twilight's birthday; don't be ashamed of your roots. That's what had compelled her to come do a little reconnecting with where she'd come from. "Isn't that right, Spike Spike?" she asked, looking back at her assistant to see him falling quite far behind.
Spike panted, struggling to keep up. "Yeah, Twilight," he panted, stopping to catch his breath. "Can I... Can I please ride on your back?" he asked, unable to keep up with the excited Unicorn mare. "I know you're excited, but I can onl

“Thank you again, Fluttershy,” said Discord, the now genuinely sick Draconequus laying in the the quarantine bubble Cadence had helped make him. He groaned. What had that worm spat on him anyway? He wasn't used to something he couldn't just snap his fingers and make go away, except for the now gone Elements of Harmony.
“Yes, you're quite welcome,” said Fluttershy, though her tone seemed a tad sharper than he was used to hearing from the Pegasus...most of the time. It wasn't like when she'd reigned him in before, but it was there. Maybe it was just the illness talking.
“Alright, we'll be headin' off, Fluttershy...” said Applejack, she and Rarity having lingered after Twilight left. “Yah sure yah can handle things?” she asked, her distrusting look more directed at the sick Draconequus than her friend.
“Yes, but thank you for your concern,” the kind pegas
Rarity Character ReviewAt times it seems as if the character of Rarity in "Friendship is Magic" is unfairly treated. Some accuse her of being self-obsessed and shallow, whilst others contend that she is their least favourite pony. And sure, Rarity may not be the most adorable of ponies, but this does not mean that she doesn't have an appeal entirely of her own. Fans are rightly divided when it comes to Rarity, but few could deny the maturity and elegance that she conveys at every opportunity.
Her obsession with fashion and looking appealing can be both blatant and subtle. At times, such as in "A Bird in the Hoof" Rarity is seen leaving the party whilst demanding that other ponies remain away from her, as to prevent her dress from getting touched by their dirty hooves. Similarly, in "Dragonshy" Rarity packs an extra scarf, presumably because, regardless of the situation, she wishes to look good. These are just two examples of Rarity at her most extreme, but they are by no means the only situations where Rarit

“That was some coronation!” Rainbow Dash announced in excitement, flying into the library the moment the door opened. “Though it’s no fair you can already fly…” muttered the pegasus somewhat bitterly, then cracked a smirk. “I was lookin’ forwards to teaching yah myself.”
Twilight followed, flanked by her friends, a sleeping Spike on her back. She blushed slightly with an embarrassed look. “Well…I actually have no idea how I flew at the coronation. I think it might have just been like the flight instincts in baby pegasi. You might still get your chance…”
Rainbow gave another smirk. “Well, it doesn’t matter; I’ve still got a new flying buddy!”
“Yeah, looking forwards to it,” the lavender mare replied, but her smile seemed a little more forced than it should have be
CorruptionShe could barely make out what was in front of her. Her breathing was difficult, with every intake of air almost painful to bear. But she couldn't give up now. Not after all this. After everypony had placed their hopes on her. It was her duty to do this. She couldn't allow anypony to see her like this.
Twilight Sparkle struggled to walk forward. Her legs were wobbling with every step she took. The darkness didn't help. Ever since she and Spike had failed to find the crystal heart, a shadow had consumed the entire interior of the castle. When that happened, she and Spike had been separated. She had no idea if he was ten feet away, twenty, or even if they were in the same room at this point. Every attempt to call out to him had been met with silence. She worried for him, as any friend would. But that was just one of many serious worries she had right now.
A thud. She nursed her side as she felt around and realised she'd walked into a wall. She silently cursed her present condi

A set of double doors slammed open, casting only a glimpse of light into the pitch black room. A man, skinny and frail, was shoved through the light, falling onto his chest in the darkness. He quickly sat up, looking back in time to see the last trace of fluorescent light disappear as the doors closed.
"Do you know why you are here, Mr. Bowing?" A deep voice boomed through the room's darkness; the man's body began to shiver, unsure where the menacing voice came from.
"Uh, I'm, uh, not sure sir," the man stuttered.
"According to my files, you are one of the men in charge of maintaining cast and crew of our television department, is that correct?"
The man simply nodded and, upon realizing that the pitch black room made it impossible to see, responded vocally, "Uh, y-yes sir."
"And tell me Mr. Bowing, what show's cast do you exactly care for?"
"Uh, M-My Little Pony: F-Friendship is Magic, sir."

My Date With RaritySecond Date--Two weeks after the Fluttershy disaster
This will also be done in transcript form.
The door to the Soothing Stone opens by the magic of two unicorns on staff. In coming are Chris and Rarity on a date.
Given the formal setting, Chris is wearing a mid-level tuxedo, sweating at returning to this nuclear test zone. Rarity is wearing a blue dress, not as fancy as her Grand Galloping Gala, but the diamonds of many colors highlighting it still make an impression.
Chris: Why here...why here....
Rarity: Oh, you shouldn't be so nervous, Chris. I'm sure nopony remembers that date you had with...(eyes twitching)...Fluttershy...
Chris: I think everybody at that occasion is also here....oh no...
The staff and ponies seated all turn to view the new arrivees. They call give Chris varying angry, cold stares.
Rarity: They're only doing that because they don't know the gentleman in you. (whispering) I hope...
They are given a booth table, and they take their seats. Chris takes a napkin and w
